The Wild Cariboos: A Wilderness Unlike Anywhere Else
Exclusive Heli-Skiing Terrain in British Columbia’s Cariboo Mountains
There are still places in British Columbia where wilderness stretches farther than the eye can see. Where ancient rainforests give way to glaciated peaks, where grizzly bears roam remote valleys, and where entire mountain ranges remain largely untouched by recreational development.
Silvertip Heli-Skiing sits in the heart of one of these remarkable places.
Hidden at the eastern end of Quesnel Lake, deep in the Cariboo Mountains of British Columbia, our lodge is surrounded by an extraordinary landscape of old-growth inland temperate rainforest, vast alpine terrain, glaciers, and some of the most remote mountain wilderness in southern and central BC.
With 1,440 square kilometres of exclusive heli-skiing tenure, virtually no competing recreational traffic, and some of our best skiing just minutes from the lodge, Silvertip offers something increasingly difficult to find: the feeling of having an entire mountain wilderness to yourself.
A Land with a History Far Older Than Our Own
While the Quesnel Lake wilderness may feel untouched by the modern world, these mountains, forests, and waterways have been known, travelled, and cared for by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial.
Silvertip Heli-Skiing respectfully acknowledges that we operate on the traditional and ancestral territories of the Secwépemc (Shuswap) peoples. We recognize their enduring connection to the lands and waters of the Quesnel Lake region, and are grateful for the opportunity to live, work, and welcome guests in this remarkable landscape.
A Rainforest in the Heart of the Canadian Interior
When most people imagine a temperate rainforest, they picture the misty coastline of British Columbia. But hundreds of kilometres inland, the Cariboo Mountains are home to something far less familiar: an inland temperate rainforest.
These forests exist because moisture-laden Pacific weather systems travel inland and rise over the mountains, bringing substantial precipitation to an otherwise continental environment.
The result is an unusual landscape of ancient western red cedar, hemlock, moss-covered forests, and deep winter snowpacks.
The Quesnel Lake region contains some of the most significant remaining old-growth inland temperate rainforest in British Columbia.
For heli-skiers, this forest environment is part of what makes the Cariboos so special. Below the alpine, the mountains descend into extensive forested terrain, offering exceptional tree skiing. These sheltered runs are particularly valuable during the deep-winter storm cycles that bring fresh snow to the region.
Further south in our tenure, historic wildfires have transformed sections of the forest into expansive, naturally gladed ski terrain. Known as the Burns, these areas offer wide-open powder lines, beautifully spaced trees, and long, flowing descents with plenty of room to open up your turns.
Together, the ancient rainforests and expansive burn areas give Silvertip an exceptional variety of tree skiing.
Don’t Forget About the Alpine
But don’t let all that incredible tree skiing overshadow what lies above the treeline. Silvertip’s tenure also encompasses spectacular high-alpine terrain, from vast open bowls and sweeping ridgelines to glaciated peaks and long, untracked powder descents.
On clear days, the alpine opens up an entirely different world. Towering peaks, expansive glaciers, and seemingly endless mountain vistas provide the backdrop for big, open turns and unforgettable runs.
And with 1,440 square kilometres of exclusive terrain to explore, there’s no shortage of variety. From steep alpine pitches and wide-open glacier skiing to sheltered rainforest runs and expansive burn terrain, Silvertip offers an extraordinary range of skiing within a single tenure.
The beauty of the Cariboos is that you don’t have to choose between exceptional tree skiing and spectacular alpine terrain. You get both.
No Crowds. No Competition for Fresh Tracks.
And perhaps the best part of all this incredible terrain? There’s virtually nobody else out here.
Unlike many backcountry destinations, Silvertip’s remote location in the eastern Quesnel Lake wilderness means almost no competing recreational traffic. No ski resorts, no snowmobile crowds, and no other heli-skiing operations sharing our tenure. Encounters with other backcountry users are exceptionally rare.
With 1,440 square kilometres of exclusive heli-skiing terrain and just two groups exploring the mountains each day, there’s an extraordinary amount of wilderness to enjoy.
And with some of our best skiing just minutes from the lodge, there’s no need to travel far to find fresh tracks. They’re right outside our door.
Surrounded by Wilderness
Silvertip sits among some of British Columbia’s most spectacular wilderness landscapes, with Cariboo Mountains, Bowron Lake, and Wells Gray Provincial Parks all nearby. Together, these parks protect more than 760,000 hectares of rugged mountains, ancient forests, glaciers, and remote valleys.
From the helicopter, the scale of this landscape is difficult to comprehend. Mountain ranges and forested valleys stretch toward the horizon, with remarkably little evidence of modern development.
Vast, untamed wilderness, with a little heli-skiing haven tucked away in the middle.
Quesnel Lake: A Remarkable Place to Call Home
At the heart of it all lies Quesnel Lake, British Columbia’s deepest lake and one of the deepest fjord lakes in the world. Carved by glaciers, its long, narrow arms stretch deep into the mountains, surrounded by ancient forests, waterfalls, and wildlife-rich valleys.
Grizzly bears, bald eagles, wolves, and other wildlife inhabit this extraordinary watershed, which also supports Pacific salmon returning from the ocean.
Silvertip Lodge sits on a secluded beachfront property near the eastern end of the lake, accessible only by boat or aircraft. No roads, no neighbouring resorts, just a warm and welcoming mountain lodge in the middle of it all.
