At the End of Quesnel Lake: What Makes Silvertip’s Location So Special

Posted on: Tuesday, October 13th, 2026

As you travel along Quesnel Lake, the shoreline stretches beneath the mountains and the signs of everyday life begin to fall away. Then the lodge comes into view, tucked between the forest and the water. It’s hard to picture a place like this until you see it for yourself.

Silvertip sits at the eastern end of Quesnel Lake, about 50 kilometres from the nearest road. There’s no road to the lodge; guests arrive by helicopter. That distance shapes the feeling of being here. You’re not passing through on your way somewhere else. You’ve made the journey to a place surrounded by water, forest, and mountains.

This is also the heart of a remarkable wilderness landscape. Bowron Lake, Cariboo Mountains, and Wells Gray parks form a connected protected area spanning more than 760,000 hectares. From the lodge, that vastness feels close: long stretches of forest, remote valleys, wetlands, glaciers, and mountain peaks reach far beyond the lake shore.

The North Arm of Quesnel Lake and the Penfold Valley are part of this landscape. They contain some of the most intact remaining inland temperate rainforest in the region, with old cedar and hemlock forests and rich habitat for wildlife. It’s a rare combination: a lush, wet forest at the foot of a high mountain landscape.

You feel the scale of the place in the quiet and in how much room there is around you. In heli-skiing, that space is shaped partly by who else is out in the backcountry: ski tourers, snowmobilers, and other guided operations. At Silvertip, the remote setting means we tend to encounter fewer other groups across the terrain we ski. The days feel open, with your attention on the landscape and the people you came with.

Some places are difficult to explain from a photograph. Silvertip is one of them. You have to make the journey, turn the corner, and see the lodge set against Quesnel Lake and the mountains for yourself.
